THE CONCEPT: Raj X Tot
Let Sfinge is a sound and visual poem about the Sphinx's epic journey to the omnipresent world of its dreams. The Sphinx flies there as a keeper of knowledge in order to find out the essence of its intimate truth.
The monumental-trans sound story is placed in a spherical structure, which represents on a grand scale the Sphinx's mental membrane. The performer, as a vocal sculpture, generates graphical images through his brain activity. These pictures are projected onto the screens of the wings during the performance.
Let Sfinge is an archaic-futuristic prototype of the visual manifestation of sound vibrations, which translate the deepest inner self directly into images on the screen of the cerebral vault.
According to the oldest mythological accounts, the Sphinx is the guardian of knowledge. As a vocal sculpture and the central character of this project, the Sphinx decides to leave its place because of the lack of attention to the guarded knowledge and flies to the omnipresent world of its dreams. During the flight through its three dreams, it encounters the deepest essence of its active presence.
The realisation, that its function in the eternal circle of evolving knowledge is unique, leads it to a decision to alight in its place again. The flight brings about the awareness that it can embody itself only in the pleasure of identification with its own truth.
The project is conceived as an intimately psychological scenic event open to all kinds of publics. The spheric structure can be put either in a larger hall or in a city square or park. It allows people to immerse themselves in a unique atmosphere and enjoy the one-hour trip that takes them into the dimension of their inner self.
With the use of original contemporary music, live vocals and technologically developed sensorial devices, Let Sfinge tries to establish an interaction between the ideal – the wish for self-fulfilment – and the alienated response of the reality. It tries to explain within its own limits the eternal gap between the illusion of reality and its real-life reflection. It is a wake up for those who want to live their deepest dream.
Let Sfinge can be defined as a contemporary trans-monumental concert based on trans electronic sound and monumental vocal memory. It is placed in a spheric structure, which simulates the mental sphere of the Sphinx.
During the vocal interpretation, the biometric sensor is attached to the Sphinx's head and captures its brain-wave activity, which is then projected onto the screens of the vault of the structure in the form of graphic images.
THE MUSIC : Raj X Tot and Riccardo Massari Spiritini
Thoughts from the essay "Notes About Music" by Riccardo Massari Spiritini:
Let Sfinge talks about the relationship between Man and the Universe, between the intimate dimension of each human being and the world. The voice represents Man, the electronic music the Universe. The melodies by Raj Kraljev were electronically interpreted by Spiritini in order to be immersed in electronic landscapes composed of quantum particles in constant movement. The slow crescendo of the Introduction, entitled "Aurali Luminoso", can be interpreted as the approach of the creative state of consciousness. Indeed, the sound of the electronic gong is a symbol of the awakening and it announces the questions posed by the Sphinx.
The Flight of the Sphinx is divided into themes and situations that project us towards space in order to deliver us back to earthly life in a renewed form.
The main goal of the compositional work consists in coherently giving body and form to a sonic fusion of Raj Kraljev's songs, sound ambients and other electronic elements created by Riccardo Massari Spiritini. This was a type of a formal and timbric challenge.
The human voice is the only "acoustic" element immersed in the imaginary space of the otherwise electronic music. This relationship between the individual voice and the electro-acoustic universe represents the dialectic foundation of the composition.
THE VOICE: The vocal sculpture Raj Kraljev as the voice of the Sphinx.
The electronic sound landscape is the labirint of the outside context. It is an ideal home, the expression of the inner self and a sometimes hostile place, whereover the ancestral memory of the sphinx can fly with its voice as light and deep as it can go.
The main technological aspect of this project is the use of BCI (Brain Computer Interface) sensors.
Their function is to capture the creative, emotional and mental pathways during the artistic act. Moreover, the main interest is making a graphic map of a creative thought in action through a recognisable model of geometrical patterns and shapes. This is the work done by visual artist Antonio Giacomin & Fluido.it.
One sensor is attached to the forehead of the Sphinx's head to symbolise the eye of wisdom. The sensor's graphical parameters have 12 layers, three for each of the four brain waves, and they are modified from performance to performance according to the different contexts and emotional content of the story. The data is processed into six images, which are projected onto six elliptical projection screens on the vault construction.
By overlapping brain maps of the same emotional content from different time interpretations we are also trying to encounter an image of our timless origin and to create a multidimentional architecture of signals which, through sensoriality of mind, leeds us to better comprehend our presence in the syntony of times.
CONTEXT – THE MODULAR MOBILITY
Mobile module as an articulated being in motion
Modular mobility is a system or a way of reading the different psychophysical levels that a mutating personality is composed of. These states are connected in an undefined way at different stages of our identity.
The artistic act is a story about the leap in consciousness and as such is an exactly defined confession of our personality. By tracking the brain impulses, concentration, focus, meditation, body movements, emotional implication and other mental or emotional states during the performing act, we show a synchronised image of the performer's integrity. In this way, we try to unveil the integrity and the essence of the psychophysical character of the personality as a particular distillation of the Whole.
This specific concentrate is a symptom of an existing imperfection in the context of a universal truth. As a matter of fact, this is not a negative element but the trace that indicates to us a precisely defined deviation of the individual from universal Oneness.
Oneness as a result of the Whole doesn't have a recognisable identity, which is why it splits into two, three or innumerable parts to become a recognisable fact. This splitting triggers the movement of mutating units that come to life in ceaseless embodiments of different expressive forms. Each of these entities is an independent subject that has to live out the specificity of its concentrate.
Perfection has therefore nothing to do with the awareness of the imaginary wholeness. Perfection is a synchronisation of the being with the symptom of its specific error. Each being is an individual product of the truth in motion and, as a specific concentrate of the whole, it is unique and perfect only in the essence of its own identity.
The Flight of the Sphinx is a complex multimedia project developed by artists from different parts of Europe over a span of three years.
The project was initiated by the Slovenian-Italian conceptual artist Rajxtot & the Intimate Notions' Dream.
The musical part of the project was realised in Barcelona and in Sveto (Slovenia) between 2010 and 2012 by Raj Kraljev and the Italian composer Riccardo Massari Spiritini, living in Barcelona.
Raj Kraljev wrote the original melodies and lyrics in different languages: English, Slovene, Italian, Spanish and Catalan, according to the spirit of international identity and the universal message of the project.
Riccardo Massari Spiritini composed the music for the intro of Let Sfinghe Aurali Luminoso, have done the sound ralisation of the Ambients and Sound Programming.
In spring 2013, the vocals were recorded in Barcelona. The sound enhancment and final mix was completed by Riccardo Massari Spiritini and Carlos Sedeño.
The final sound mastering for the CD and vinyl was done in summer 2013 at Sonolab studio in Ljubljana by Sašo Kalan.
Cerebral maps and videoprojections for the performing presentations realized in autumn 2013 in Trieste by Antonio Giacomin - Fluido.it.
